7. Tryouts FAQ

Who is eligible to try out for Georgia Kings Basketball?

Tryouts are open to players in the eligible grade/age groups defined for the upcoming season. Please refer to our main Tryouts or Registration page for the specific grade levels included in the 2026 season.

Is AAU eligibility based on grade or age?

AAU basketball eligibility is determined primarily by age, with divisions commonly labeled by grade. Players must meet the AAU age cutoff for their division (as of August 31, 2026), even if they are in the corresponding school grade. Georgia Kings Basketball follows all AAU eligibility requirements for tournament play.

Eligibility Example:

If a player is trying out for a 6th Grade team for the 2026 AAU season:

  • The player must be enrolled in 6th grade for the 2025–2026 school year.
  • The player must also meet the AAU age cutoff for 6th grade meaning an athlete can be no older than 12 on or before August 31, 2026.

Grade Policy: An athlete who is in the 6th grade as of October 1, 2025 and who is no older than 13 on or before August 31, 2026, is eligible to compete in the 12U/6th Grade division.

Even if a player is in the correct grade, they cannot compete in that division if they exceed the AAU age limit.

Is attendance at tryouts mandatory?

Yes. Attendance and participation in tryouts are mandatory for team placement. Coaches and evaluators must see each player participate in order to make fair roster decisions.

What should my player bring to tryouts?
  • Basketball shoes & athletic clothing
  • A refillable water bottle
  • Printed or digital copy of your LeagueApps registration receipt
  • Any medically required items (inhaler, etc.)

Basketballs are usually provided, but players may bring their own if requested by the coaching staff.

What if we miss the registration deadline?

Registration must be completed by 9:00 AM on February 1, 2026. To maintain fairness and proper evaluation preparation, late registrations are generally not accepted. If you have an emergency situation, please contact GKB support as early as possible.

How many players are selected for each team?

Roster sizes vary by age group, but each team typically maintains a controlled number of players to ensure meaningful development and playing time. Final roster counts are determined by the coaching staff and GKB management based on tryout performance, team needs, and registration numbers.

How are playing time and roles determined?

Playing time and roles are determined by the coaching staff and based on:

  • Skill level & basketball IQ
  • Effort & attitude in practices and games
  • Practice attendance
  • Game situations & matchups

Tryout selection does not guarantee equal playing time.

Are there additional costs beyond the $25 tryout fee?

Yes. The $25 fee covers tryout participation only. Players who make a team will have separate season fees and uniform costs. Full fee details will be provided in the Membership Invitation email.

What is the refund policy for season fees?

Once a player accepts a roster spot, families commit to paying the full season fees. No refunds will be issued for any reason, consistent with GKB policies.

When does the season run?

The regular season runs from February through June. Coaches will communicate practice schedules, tournaments, and key dates after rosters are finalized.

What if my child cannot attend tryouts due to injury or illness?

If your player has a documented injury or illness, please notify GKB as soon as possible. In some cases, alternative evaluations may be arranged — however, this is not guaranteed.

Can parents watch tryouts?

In most cases, tryouts are closed to parents to ensure athletes can focus and evaluators can do their jobs without distraction. If a facility allows limited viewing, details will be communicated beforehand.

When will we know if our child made a team?

Coaches submit selections to GKB management within 48 hours of tryouts. Families will receive Membership Invitation emails immediately after rosters are finalized.

How do we accept our roster spot?

Families must follow the steps in the Membership Invitation email and respond within 24 hours. Not responding in time may result in the spot being offered to another player.
